10,000 Raingardens: Exploring
and using methods for
quantifying raingarden
benefits

In March 2024, GAT commissioned Mott MacDonald to carry out a piece of research exploring tools and methodologies currently used to quantify raingarden benefits, and to then apply selected methods to five case studies across Scotland. This research was funded by Garfield Weston Foundation and Hydro Nation Chair.

Two parts of the study are available to download below, they can be read separately or together.

Review of Methods

Following an initial discovery exercise which collated existing tools and methodologies, this report presents an in-depth review of three methods: ciriabest; GI-Val and NBS Benefits Explorer. It sets out the relative merits and drawbacks of each approach.

Preferred Method Application

This report applies ciriabest and GI-Val methodologies to five exemplar raingarden projects of a variety of type and scale.

 Greener Gardens – Legacy Publication

Back in 2016, CSGNT (now the Green Action Trust), along with Greener Gardens project partners, Scottish Government and Taylor Wimpey produced an introductory guide to raingardens aimed at housing developers. The document gives details on how to incorporate small green infrastructure interventions into gardens in new housing estates and how these can contribute to green networks, mitigation for climate change, and the Scottish Governments Green Infrastructure: Design and Placemaking policy.

The guide was launched at Taylor Wimpey’s Torrance Park estate by Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Communities and Pensioners, Alex Neil, in March 2016.
